Using the latest forecast, a weather window appears to open today for a “doable” crossing of Lake Huron. The past few windy days have been fueling the high wave action, keeping all pleasure crafts off the lake. The wind is forecasted to change direction late morning and quell those swells! 🌊
At 9:30 am, we cast off and head into Lake Huron.
We head out of the St. Clair River into a very choppy Lake Huron.
It definitely is not the worst water we have experienced, but cruising 165 miles in this constant chop is very arduous! Once we reach the outskirts of the Georgian Bay and Tobermory, the water becomes smoother and we become happier!
We pass through the Fathom Five National Marine Park. This is Canada’s first national marine conservation area. Due to the treacherous shoals and the shifting weather in this area, shipwrecks are plentiful. The marine park strives to protect and display these 22 shipwrecks and the surrounding historical lighthouses.
We finally arrive into Little Tub Harbor of Tobermory. Tobermory is a very small town, population of 1,000, but despite the small size, they are known as the “freshwater scuba diving capital of the world”, due to the aforementioned numerous shipwrecks that lie in the surrounding waters.
Restless Soul, who made the crossing today also, arrives a bit later. We spend the next two days together sharing drinks and dinner. A great couple, despite Sue’s allegiance to the St. Louis Cardinals. 🤣
A wonderful two days in Tobermory. We will continue exploring the Georgian Bay, as we head to Killarney, along with Restless Soul. 😊
Ca. 40 years ago we drove to Tobermory and took the ferry. We rented a sloop somewhere around Espanola. Wendy, Sarah and Mary, ——just little kids. We spent the entire week’s rental anchored in an inlet because of a storm in north channel.
Does Tobermory car ferry still go?
UGH! Nothing worse than bad weather ruining a great trip! I believe they do still operate a car ferry, although I didn’t see it myself. We were in the inner harbor and the ferry operates on the outskirts.
