Today we journey 108 miles and arrive back to our home state of Ohio! OH!
The rain has finally cleared and it looks to be a beautiful day for a boat ride!
Even Lake Erie decides to cooperate today! Great day for a homecoming to Rocky River!
About 40 miles east of Cleveland we pass the operational Perry Nuclear Power Plant. Originally designed as a two unit, construction on the 2nd unit was abandoned, despite having all the structures built, including the second 500 foot cooling tower. This nuclear plant was scheduled to close in 2021, as they could not compete with the natural gas plants. To avert the closing, the Ohio House passed Bill 6, funding the plant from residents’ utility bills. Since then, the US DOJ has found this bill to be part of the Ohio Nuclear Bribery Scandal. So how long smoke will continue to billow from the one operational cooling tower is anyone’s guess.
We soon spy Cleveland and will continue west until we arrive to Cleveland Yacht Club on the Rocky River.
Off the coast of Cleveland, lies the 5 mile crib water intake. While it is actually only 3 miles offshore, its tunnel stretches 5 miles to the pumping station. It is the only water intake above the surface of Lake Erie. Its construction, over 100 years ago, did not come without a heavy price. Numerous men lost their lives from explosions, suffocations and collapses.
We see the rocks and marker at the opening to the Cleveland Yacht Club on Rocky River. We will spend two nights here as a guest of my father- in law, a member since the 1950’s! Thanks Dad!
Arriving into the yacht club.
All smiles! We came a long way to be back to Captain Tom’s roots. ❤
The Cleveland Yacht Club is a beautiful facility and we had two gorgeous sunny days to enjoy our visit.
Dinner with dad and his girlfriend, Lynn, was definitely the highlight!
Flower, the balloon clown, made the night even more entertaining.
I think I know who this belongs to! 🤡
A trip back to Rocky River would not be complete without a visit to the childhood homestead. The view never gets old !
We had a wonderful two days in Rocky River. Many thanks to Dad for your generous sponsorship of Prime 11 at CYC, to Lynn for joining us for dinner, and to Destiny for the wonderful steak dinner and her carpool skills. Next stop will be Sandusky!
Great to see Tom back in his old stomping grounds!! Your pictures are beautiful 😊
Yes he is!
Thanks for sharing beautiful pix and interesting captions.
