Our Journey this day is 55 miles up the Hudson River. This part of the Hudson River is very wide and very deep, some points at 150+ feet. Despite this, there are very unexpected shallow areas. Captain Tom manages to find one of these shallow shoals while maneuvering back into the channel. All good and no harm done, thanks to a soft mucky river bottom, but a lesson learned to give strict adherence to the charts.
The further up the Hudson, the terrain changes a bit and we encounter rocky hills and cliffs. The bridges travel into the hills while trains pass through.
Cortlandt Manor, NY
On this day, our travels up the Hudson take us past West Point.
West Point is an impressive campus from the water. Founded in 1802, it is the oldest of the 5 American service academies. However, since 1778 it has been and remains an active army post, making it the oldest continuously occupied army post. The cadets at drills. To get into West Point, you must be nominated by your senator or vice-president, have a stellar background, high intelligence with grades or scores to prove it, and commit to serving in the army for 5 years after your graduation. Every cadet attends school tuition free.
We travel north and encounter a very scenic lighthouse., framed by the Catskills.
This is the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse. It is only surviving wooden lighthouses on the Hudson River and is nicknamed the “Maid of the Meadows”.
We make our way into the Roundout Yacht Basin and head for the marina.
We definitely are cruising in a basin, just not sure yacht is the appropriate adjective in this case!
We pull into the Roundout Yacht Basin, fill up with diesel, and head to our slip. They have several boats staying for the night, so the face dock is quite cramped but we all fit. The marina boasts of a restaurant, which is only open on Saturdays, a swimming pool and even corn hole! It is a hot day, so we take care of priorities first.
Scored some ICE!Pool to chill us downRestaurant is closed, but the Prime 11 galley is OPEN!In tight for the night!
Another good day on the water. Tomorrow onto Waterford.
