We bid a fond farewell to New York early Sunday morning. Not many of the ferries are running yet so the New York Harbor is relatively calm. We enjoy a very scenic cruise on this beautiful day and see additional interesting sights of New York and New Jersey that we didn’t see by land.
Further down the Hudson, we encounter the first bridge to cross over from New Jersey to New York. I now understand why an Uber back to Jersey City from Lower Manhattan would be very $$$.
This is the George Washington Bridge. It is hard to tell from the photo, but it is a double decker bridge. This bridge is the world’s busiest motor vehicle bridge. It opened in 1931 and was the longest main bridge span in the world until the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937.
Once we pass the George Washington Bridge, the buildings fade. It is almost as if the bridge is holding its spans wide out to stop the buildings from overtaking the beautiful treed mountains we now encounter.
Up river, less than 20 miles from NYC, we encounter another bridge crossing the Hudson. This is the Tappan Zee Bridge. It is a twin cable bridge and connects Nyack, NY to Tarrytown, NY. New Jersey is no longer in the picture anymore. 😉
We make our way to Half Moon Bay Marina, located in the city of Croton-On-Hudson, NY.
The town has one really nice restaurant, but it is Sunday, so they are closed. We opt to walk to the Apple Farm Grocery Store and cook on the boat. Since the walk is over 1 mile of hilly terrain in 90+ temperatures, we choose wisely our purchases. We had planned to stay for two nights and explore the wonderful bike paths in this area, however, there were two problems with our plan. One, rain is forecasted tomorrow. Two, the bike rental place is closed on Monday. So plan B, we leave tomorrow for Roundout Yacht Basin.
Another day, another adventure!
I’m my four times a year visits to NYC long time ago, I would drive on the Tapanzee bridge and occasionally the george Washington. So long ago….. can’t believe I navigated all that with only Mapquest printed instructions! Very beautiful!!!!
AND you probably thought nothing of doing it! Now would be hesitant even with our GPS! Thanks for the comment!❤
