Our journey from Cape May to Atlantic City was about 45 miles. Captain Tom did not have our spot tracker on, so the actual route was not recorded for this leg of our journey.
As we near the Atlantic City coastline, we see the Coast Guard practicing rescues.
We arrive to Atlantic City and head to the marina at the Golden Nugget. The marina itself is called the Senator Frank D. Farley State Marina and is a public facility of the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, but, is managed by the Golden Nugget. I am not sure I understand exactly who does what as far as marina upkeep, but we have heard before arriving, that the docks are in disarray and the dock hands are not the best. However, we find our slip in okay shape and was greeted by a great young dock hand who grabbed and cleated our lines just fine.
Since we are only here for a half day, we head to the boardwalk. Since the Golden Nugget is not on the boardwalk, we take the jitney. We have been warned not to walk around Atlantic City, so we heed the advice. We board the jitney right outside of the Golden Nugget, very convenient. It is $2.25 a ride per person, so not a bad deal.
I must admit, the jitney ride is a bit nauseating and scary. We feel certain after each shift change they need to install new brakes, new shock absorbers and new horns. Given the personality of the drivers, I believe they strive to provide the roughest ride they can along with the most near crashes possible. I suppose that is the only pleasure they eek out of a job they clearly hate. But, we made it to the boardwalk in one piece, so all was good.
We finish our day with dinner at the steakhouse in Golden Nugget and a small bit of gambling. Neither activity provided much reward, sad to say.
Our adventure in Atlantic City is over. It was an educational stop, but in lessons I prefer to remain ignorant. It is a city struggling as are its residents. The heydays definitely are yesterdays.
Now on to the Big Apple!
Great description of AC. Only further downhill since our port call there in 2002.
Definitely a depressing city…
