We leave Charlevoix on a sunny morning. Beautiful homes surround Round Lake.
This 10,000 sq. ft. house, home to one of the Four Winn’s founders, boasts of what else…an aquatic garage. Asking price in 2022… $8.3 million.
Of course there has to be one of the famous Charlevoix’s mushroom houses on the banks of Round Lake.
This house pretty much dwarfs the little mushroom next door.
A close pass by the Emerald Isle, which takes passengers and their cars to Beaver Island.
Finally we are at the drawbridge taking us back out to Lake Michigan. This time we wait for the opening.
Our hearts beat a little slower with the bridge opened as we pass under.
Charlevoix South Pier Light Station, marking the way from the Pine River Channel into Lake Michigan.
Lake Michigan has some chop today, but much improved over the last several days. Once into the east arm of the Grand Traverse Bay, the water becomes smoother.
Entrance into Elk Rapids
Elk Rapids is a small village of 1,529 people. It is nestled in the area called the Chain of Lakes, which is a 75-mile-long waterway consisting of 14 lakes and connecting rivers, which empty into the Grand Traverse Bay. The Elk Rapids Hydroelectric Dam, off the Elk River, however divides the lakes. While the water can flow between the two lakes, boats can not.
The Elk River rapids
We will only spend one day at Elk Rapids due to the weather forecast, but our one day is beautiful. We have a nice time exploring the small quaint village.
The streets of Elk Rapids
The harbor’s community herb garden.
The beach is a short walk from downtown and the marina.
Large trees with picnic areas.
The beach also offers tennis, volleyball and a playground.
But not all is perfect in Elk Rapids as the village appears unsafe for those that happen to be Happy.
Happy has been kidnapped.
As Happy cannot be found at Elk Rapids, we will take our leave and head to Leland.

It is a very cute little town…Too bad it was not the best weather when you were there. Such a short season in Northern Michigan.
