We leave Galleon Marina and head only 5 miles to Oceans Edge Resort and Marina on Stock Island. It is only 5 miles, around the tip of Key West and into the Atlantic Ocean, but it is a rough 5 miles. I suppose there is a reason for a small craft advisory.
We arrive at Ocean’s Edge and are assigned slip 629, which happens to be on the charter boat dock, not ideal, but we are happy to be docked. We plan to stay one week, as Captain Tom needs to fly north out of Key West for a business meeting. Ocean’s Edge is a a beautiful resort, but no longer within walking distance of much, although they do have a shuttle to Old Town Key West operating every hour. We are fortunate as we are loaned a car from our Marlow buddy Jerry. Thanks Jerry!
Unfortunately, I bring an unwanted souvenir with me from Key West.
The Captain, after enjoying his positive results in January, does not succumb to the bug after numerous tests. He is in the clear. However, we both lay low, which I am happy to do as I really do not feel well. Luckily, there is an air show daily that keeps us entertained , courtesy of NAS (Naval Air Station) Key West located on Boca Chica with the flight path over our marina. The NAS is the training facility for air to air combat fighter aircraft for all military services. The US Navy’s presence has quite a history, dating back to 1823. As wealthy shipping merchants operated their vessels in these waters, it became a favorite hunting ground for pirates such as the infamous Blackbeard. To combat this piracy, the naval base was established.
We also were entertained by the marina sea life right at the docks.
While this is not the worst place to feel unwell, it definitely has not been a fun week at Stock Island. Covid is not a walk in the park, more like a crawl in a bed! Feeling somewhat better, and with the weather improving after several windy rough days, we will head to Marathon, Florida for more rest and isolation. Stay well everyone!
If not for the courage of the fearless crew….
Hang in there, Jackie. I hope you’re feeling better soon!
