We will navigate under two bridges immediately upon departure. The first one, the newer Maple-Oregon Bridge with a 24 ft. clearance, we pass under easily without an opening request. The second bridge, The Historic Sturgeon Bay Bridge, aka the Michigan Street Bridge, built in 1929, has a low clearance of 11.5 ft. and will require an opening. The bridge opens, on request, on the half hour and the hour with both bridges operating under one bridge tender. We request an opening at 9:30 am.
We enter into Green Bay, named by French explorer Jean Nicolet, quite simply for its greenish hue.
We arrive to Sister Bay Marina, the one and only marina in the area. Dockage is scarce during the prime summer months and we were lucky to secure a couple days.
Sister Bay is a small village on the Door Peninsula, both in size and population. Less than 1,000 people call this land of 2.58 square miles home. On this Saturday in July, they all came to the beach!
We explore the area and happen upon The Holy Transfiguration Chapel. It is an Orthodox Christian Church secluded away in the woods. It is a very serene place to light a candle or say a prayer…if you can find it! It is open 24 hours of every day and welcomed to all visitors.
Needing supplies we head to the Piggly Wiggly nearby… just up the hill about a mile. At least the walk is downhill with the bags!
It is a weekend and live music is jumping at all the local bars. The band at the Garage this night is great! Also, there is an additional bar perk, just for us, this particular weekend. As the Reds are battling the Brewers in a weekend series, their baseball games are broadcast on all the bar T.V.s. Unfortunately, the Reds do not fare so well and are swept.😥
What Sister Bay is best known for in Door County is excellent dining establishments. Our two dinners were excellent. The best meals in a long time.
Besides serving great food, Sister Bay is renowned worldwide for their restaurant rooftop eccentricities.
Our slip at the marina was perfect for capturing beautiful sunsets over the waters of Green Bay.
Unfortunately between the Canadian wildfire smoke and evening storms, the sunsets were escaping us.
Finally, our last night, after an evening of storms, hail, pounding rain and high winds, the sun makes a farewell appearance. Tomorrow is another travel day within Door County. North to Washington Island we will go!
Beautiful sunset pic! We had the pleasure of visiting Door County a couple decades ago with our friends who are from Green Bay! We ate a delicious breakfast at Al’s with the goats on the rooftop! Door County is a great place!!
