We depart Chicago with clear blue skies, drastically different from our arrival day.
We leave Chicago’s inner harbor, busy with lots of activities!
We enter the outer harbor and pass by the Chicago Harbor Light, which premiered its state of the art engineering marvels at the Chicago’s Worlds Fair in 1893. It was moved to its current location in 1919 and remains an active, now automated, lighthouse standing at the northern end of the break wall protecting the Chicago Harbor.
The water and weather conditions are nice today. Two hours later we enter the Waukegan Harbor.
We are scheduled to stay here for 4 days. The marina offers free bicycles, restaurants nearby and even a pickleball court!
We venture into downtown Waukegan, to explore what the town has to offer.
We discover that Waukegan is the proud birthplace of Jack Benny.
In 1939, Jack Benny’s film, Man About Town, premiered at the Waukegan Genesee Theater, which still operates today. The theater’s manager was very welcoming and gave us a mini tour inside the theater.
The only shop that was open during our walk in the city was the “infamous” (we were told) Horsefeathers, a family owned business since 1984.
Despite the sale signs, the merchandise selection of gauges and body jewelry doesn’t exactly “float our boat”. 😃
We venture further on and find the art park.
We bid farewell to downtown Waukegan and walk the mile back to the marina. We have seen enough progress for one day!
A four day Waukegan experience, we come to realize, is too much. We will leave 2 days early for a new destination, Northpoint Marina.
