We leave Everglades City around 8 am on Easter Monday. The Gulf waters look smooth and great!
We run without incident until an hour out of Key West. Our trim tabs stop working. We stop to replace the fuse, but that is not the cause. It will have to wait until we are docked to diagnose the problem. Unfortunately, they are stuck in an awkward position so the boat is keeled heavy on the port. We arrive to Galleon Marina resembling a drunken sailor, but if you arrive anywhere like that, Key West is the place! Galleon is our favorite marina in Key West, although quite expensive at $6.50 a foot. Located on Front Street, just off Duval, you are close to everything. Key West, in general, is a very walkable town as long as you stay in Old Town. Of course, our first walking destination will be West Marine..
We’ve been to Key West numerous times. I’ve included just a few of our musts each trip.
We also visited the Butterfly Conservatory for the first time. It is short but beautiful stroll through an atrium filled with butterflies, birds, and even two resident flamingos, Rhett and Scarlet. We learned some interesting facts about butterflies such as their lifespan is very short, from a few days to a few weeks. Most species have no mouths and rely on all the nutrients they were able to store as caterpillars, hence the hungry hungry caterpillar famed story! Their diet is strictly liquid nectar which they take in with their proboscis and taste with their feet.
Other sights of Key West.
As always, we enjoyed our latest trip to Key West. It is great to see the businesses up and running and all the tourists returning. Last time we were here was during the Covid shutdown and Key West was a ghost town.
Week one of two in Key West is over. We will spend week two on Stock Island.
Looking good, Friends! Hope the trim tabs were an easy fix!
