It was a long day. While only 56 miles. there are 2 locks and 11 lift bridges. It takes us about 8 hours.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The lift bridge operators start at 7 am. We arrive at 7:30 am. The bridge promptly opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the bridge, we soon pass through the two locks of the day, 32 and 33. Remember there is no 31. <\/em><\/strong>\ud83e\udd37\u200d\u2642\ufe0f<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Through the course of the day we will have 10 more bridges to request an opening. The unique thing is that some of these bridge operators take care of more than one bridge. So…sometimes you need to wait for them to be free, hop in their truck and make their way to the neighboring town and open up the next bridge for you.<\/em><\/strong> You can not be in a hurry obviously.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

At the lift bridges, you see what it spans. Sometimes it is a town, sometimes it is just a few buildings and sometimes it is just a road. Its always something though! \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Broadsport, one of the lift bridge towns, a building catches my eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m pretty sure they don’t make Ivory Soap here!<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Born and raised in Cincinnati, the proud headquarters of Procter & Gamble, I find this a curious painted building, so far away from Ivorydale! Doing some googling, there is an interesting back story. This Ivory Soap building sign was originally painted in the late 1800’s for canal travelers. It is one of the oldest outdoor advertisements in the US. The interesting part is how it became a slogan for P & G. Apparently a worker at P & G took a lunch break and forgot to turn off the stirring machine mixing the fat with the soda, the ingredients of soap. Upon returning, and realizing his mistake, they tested the product and found it still effective. Not wanting to waste the batch, it was cut into bars and sold. Soon letters came pouring in as people loved the soap as it floats! No longer did they need to grope for soap in the tub. Naturally, P & G took advantage of this mistake, which basically just inserted more air with the additional stirring thereby increasing buoyancy. Thus came the slogan ” the soap that floats”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lift bridges are just one of the many bridges we see on our travels. Definitely now understand the boat height restriction.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Some bridges have murals of past times, which are nice to view.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Near Medina we pass over a road that goes under the canal – the only one. Tradition has that you honk your horn as you make your way through. There were no vehicles passing through, so I can not confirm this rumor!<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We arrive to Medina. Again the village docks are free and have electric and water hookup. We are the only ones here on this Thursday.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Our single occupancy does not last long. Word has it that there is an issue with the Gasport hydraulic lift bridge on the Erie Canal, just west of us. It will be closed a WEEK for repair and clean up of oil. WHAT??? We are heading west tomorrow, or so we thought.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Medina is a nice town, but wasn’t planning on a staycation!<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

With plans changed, we adjust and take advantage of all that Medina offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We went to every store at least once. Discovered Della’s Chocolates …so good!<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We walked to Medina Falls, went to the railroad museum, saw the car show Friday night, and shopped the farmers market on Saturday.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We walked 1\/2 mile to do our laundry at Wash Board Willy’s, which honestly, a wash board would have been preferable to the spin cycle on their washers!<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

For how small Medina is, they have two superb restaurants, Taste and Zambistro. We were also fortunate to have friends from Buffalo come visit. Thanks to Jerry for treating us on Saturday! \u2764<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the grace of God, along with the hands of many workers cleaning and repairing 24\/7, by Saturday afternoon the gates reopen for canal travel. To avoid the onslaught of those traveling this day, we opt to stay one more day in Medina.
