Today’s trip was 75 miles. We leave at 8 AM.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n

It is a bright and clear Sunday morning as we happily break our ties to the tug.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Within 45 minutes of cruising, we come to our last lock on the Illinois River, The Lagrange Lock and Dam. The drop is usually about 10 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n

Today, as it is a wicket gate lock and the river level is higher, we will not pass through the lock and dam, but pass over it. There is no wait involved and we navigate the area as open water.<\/p>\n\n\n

While we did not have to request an opening for the lock, we do need to ask for an opening for the bridge ahead. <\/p>\n\n\n

This lift bridge, built in 1931, is the Joe Page Bridge (Hardin Bridge). Its lift span, at 308 feet nine inches long, is the largest span of this type in the world.\u00a0Due to its age, the bridge has been targeted for replacement, much to the horror of historic bridge enthusiastics. Luckily we have it lift and pass us through on Sunday, as the next day, Monday morning, due to all the flooding in the area, a tree toppled and fell on the bridge closing it for several hours.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n

The bridge tender opens it just enough for us to squeak by.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The river, while a little more choppy with white caps, is definitely calmer in the boat wake category as most vacationers have shut down their camps, packed up their toys and hauled out their boats, reluctantly heading home after this long holiday weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
