It is just 24 miles from Little Current to Killarney. A very scenic<\/strong><\/em> 24 miles!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

It is a bright sunny day as we pass under the Little Current Swing Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n

It is 9:33 AM, halfway between the regularly scheduled bridge openings but we just glide right under. The perks of tiny boats!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

We pass by the lighthouse on Strawberry Island.<\/p>\n\n\n

This lighthouse was first lit in 1881. The last keeper left in the late 1960s. Today the property can be leased as a summer cottage. The light atop the tower is solar powered, but the dwelling has no electricity or running water.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The closer we get to Killarney, the smokier it gets. This map of the wildfire smoke explains it all as we head right into the center of the red eye!<\/p>\n\n\n

Sportsman Lodge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

This is a repeat trip to Killarney. On our first visit, last fall, we were able to stay at the Killarney Mountain Lodge Marina. This time, as it is peak season, we were booted to the Sportsman Lodge Dock. While the resorts are under the same ownership, sharing all amenities, the Sportsman Lodge’s location is not as ideal as it is down the street from the mountain lodge and all its amenities. We have no choice and are thankful to be on the Killarney side of the river and not on the St. George Island side. The St. George docks require calling a ferry to bring you over to Killarney proper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our first day is a smoky one, which is quite a disappointment as it definitely dulls the usually breathtaking scenery, although perhaps in a way it is now truly breathtaking.\ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We use the smoky day to haul the laundry up to the laundromat (there is no laundry at Sportsman’s Lodge…but free laundry at the mountain lodge naturally\ud83d\ude21) and buy a few things at the local grocery store.<\/p>\n\n\n

Thankfully, the wind does shift during our stay, blue clear skies appear, and we take the courtesy bikes to the lighthouse trail. <\/p>\n\n\n

The views, as you hike to the top of the lighthouse, are gorgeous!<\/p>\n\n\n

We round out our visit with an evening at Killarney Mountain Lodge.<\/p>\n\n\n

We meet up again with Bill and Nancy for dinner at the Ranch House. Much better food and service this time!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Afterwards we head to the Carousel Lounge where there is live music every night. I believe the whole resort is here to drink and dance! Such a fun atmosphere!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
